Schematron validation

What is Schematron Validation?

Schematron is a rule-based validation language used to check the content and logic of an XML file (such as an e-invoice). While other technologies check if the code itself is structured correctly, Schematron checks whether the data makes sense in relation to specific business rules and legislation.

How it works

Think of Schematron as a "digital customs control." It reviews the invoice for logical consistency. A Schematron rule might state: "If VAT is applied, a VAT registration number must also be provided." If the rule is not met, the invoice "fails" validation, and the sender receives an error message. This ensures that the recipient does not receive documents that are legally deficient or impossible to post.

Semantic Precision

Schematron validation ensures semantic correctness. This means it checks complex dependencies within the document—for example, verifying that the sum of all invoice lines matches the total amount. By validating against Schematron rules before sending, you minimize the risk of invoices being rejected by the recipient. This leads to a much higher degree of automation, known as Straight-Through Processing (STP).
