What is a GLN?

A GLN (Global Location Number)—historically referred to as an EAN number in Denmark—is a unique 13-digit identification number. It functions as a digital "mailbox address" for businesses and public authorities. While a company registration number identifies who the company is, the GLN identifies where the electronic documents should be delivered. GLN numbers are part of the global GS1 standard, ensuring that every address is unique worldwide.

The difference between a Registration Number and a GLN

Think of it like this: A company's registration number (like a CRN or VAT number) is its "Social Security Number." It identifies the legal entity. A GLN, on the other hand, is the specific "delivery address." A large organization might have one registration number but hundreds of GLNs—one for each department, warehouse, or branch office—ensuring that an e-invoice hits the right desk.

How to get a GLN

GLN numbers are issued by GS1. Once a business has a GLN, it can be registered in the Peppol network, allowing partners to send invoices directly to their accounting system. It is a fundamental requirement for anyone doing business with the public sector or large retail chains.
